He began his career as an amateur footballer, playing for clubs like Wimbledon F.C. and Charlton F.C. After losing a leg in an air raid in 1941, he turned to songwriting. Barnes is credited with nearly 200 songs, partnering with notable composers to write hits like 'Broken Wings' and 'My Love and Devotion,' which won an Ivor Novello Award. He passed away on December 28, 1991, in Bromley.
