Claude Howard Dorgan (1932–2012) was an American academic recognized for his research on religion in Appalachia. After earning degrees from the University of Texas, he taught in Texas and Idaho before obtaining a Ph.D. in speech communication from Louisiana State University. He became a faculty member at Appalachian State University and focused on the rhetorical style of old-time Baptist preachers, conducting over thirty years of research on the subject. Dorgan also edited the religion section of the Encyclopedia of Appalachia and received the Thomas Wolfe Literary Award in 1993.
