Howard McDiarmid was a physician and political figure in British Columbia who represented Alberni in the Legislative Assembly from 1966 to 1972 as a Social Credit member. He was the only physician in Tofino from 1955 until 1972, delivering over 100 babies a year. McDiarmid contributed to the establishment of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and later co-founded the Wickaninnish Inn in 1996. He authored a book about his experiences and efforts in preserving Long Beach, and passed away in Victoria in 2010.
