Howard S. England (1914–1999) was a key figure in transforming Fort Zachary Taylor into a historic landmark in Key West, Florida. A civilian architect/engineer for the Navy, he also served as a Marine Corps Combat Photographer in WWII. England led extensive archaeological excavations of the Fort, recovering many Civil War artifacts. He authored a book on its history and contributed to the establishment of the park service. Recognized for his dedication, he received the Distinguished Service Award and was later honored as a Great Floridian for his impact on Florida’s heritage.
