Huda Akil is a Syrian-American neuroscientist born on May 19, 1945. Her pioneering research has advanced the understanding of the neurobiology of emotions, particularly pain, anxiety, and depression. She provided the first physiological evidence of endorphins' role in the brain and showed that stress can activate them, leading to pain inhibition. As a distinguished professor at the University of Michigan, she co-directs the Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience Institute and has contributed significantly to depression research. Akil has been recognized with numerous awards and has served as a former president of the Society for Neuroscience.
