He served as the president of the indigenous organization ECUARUNARI from 2003 to 2009 and has been the president of the indigenous federation CONAIE since April 2011. He became involved in community work as a child, taking on roles due to a lack of literate individuals. Cholango has been instrumental in various indigenous organizations, focusing on education and youth initiatives.
