Hyun Ki-young is a South Korean writer born on January 16, 1941, on Cheju Island. He experienced the traumatic Cheju Massacre at age seven, which profoundly influenced his literary career. After studying English education at Seoul National University, he began teaching and writing prose. His debut story 'Father' was published in 1975, and he was notably the first Korean author to address the Cheju Massacre in his works. Hyun has received multiple literary awards, including the Manhae Literature Prize in 1990 and is an advocate for Cheju cultural studies.
