He specializes in the history of Ukraine during the Cossack era and church history, and is known for collecting oral testimonies about the Holodomor in Ukraine from 1932 to 1933. He holds a Doctor of Historical Sciences degree (1989) and has served as a professor at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy since 1990. He has received multiple honors including the Distinguished Educator of Ukraine (2005) and the Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine (2007).
