Ian Donald was a British physician and a pioneer in the diagnostic use of ultrasound in obstetrics. Born in Cornwall to a Scottish medical family, he studied medicine at the University of London. A Royal Air Force medical officer during World War II, he developed an interest in radar and sonar. He created significant medical devices, including a neonatal ventilator and a positive pressure ventilator. Appointed to a professorship at the University of Glasgow in 1954, he built the world's first obstetric ultrasound machine in 1963, enabling fetal anomaly detection.
