He won a silver medal at the 1993 Junior World Championships and transitioned to senior competitions in 1994, winning multiple medals over the years, including three golds at the World Championships. Postma was notable for his Olympic achievements, securing a gold and silver medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. His career concluded in the fall of 2004, and he has been married to former German speed skater Anni Friesinger since 2009.
