He serves as the senator for Imo North in the 9th Nigerian National Assembly, having first been elected in 1999 on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) platform. He was re-elected in 2003. Ararume held key Senate committee positions and was appointed chairman of the NNPC Ltd. during the Petroleum Industry Act implementation. Despite a failed gubernatorial campaign in 2007 that ended in a Supreme Court ruling, he remains influential in Nigerian politics.
