Ignatius Jacob III was the 121st Patriarch of Antioch for the Syrian Orthodox Church, born on October 12, 1912, in Bartella, Iraq. He served as a teacher in India before becoming a bishop in 1950 and patriarch in 1957. He moved the patriarchate to Damascus in 1959 and worked to unite Eastern Orthodox churches and promote concord among the Syrian community in India. An author of over thirty books and a repository of Syriac hymns, he died on June 26, 1980, and was buried in Damascus.
