Igor Kurchatov was a prominent Soviet physicist, known as the 'father' of the Soviet atomic bomb. Born on January 12, 1903, in the Ural region, he later moved to Crimea. He became director of the Nuclear Physics Laboratory in Leningrad in 1938. Kurchatov was instrumental in theoretical research on nuclear reactions and was the first to announce the self-fission of uranium. He was a member of the Communist Party and the Soviet Academy of Sciences and oversaw the first Soviet atomic bomb test in 1949, and contributed to the development of the world's first hydrogen bomb.
