He graduated from high school in 1946 and studied agricultural sciences in Copenhagen, obtaining his bachelor's degree in 1952 and licentiate degree in 1957. He earned his PhD at the Royal Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in 1966. Fernqvist worked as an assistant in various agricultural institutions and was involved in fruit and berry cultivation research. He also contributed writings on these subjects during his career.
