He established Ikea in 1943 at the age of 17. Initially offering a variety of items for mail order, Ikea later revolutionized furniture retail with do-it-yourself packaging. Known for his frugality, Kamprad's fortune was estimated at $58.7 billion at the time of his death. He lived in Switzerland for several decades to avoid high Swedish taxes and passed away in his home in Småland, Sweden.
