Tähkänen graduated with a master's degree in musical theater from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and previously studied at Tampereen Ammattikorkeakoulu. She worked at the Tampereen Työväen Teatteri from 2015 to 2017 and married Julius Martikainen in 2022.
