Ioan Curea was a Romanian astronomer and seismologist known for his contributions to the fields of seismic measurement and astronomy. He invented a horizontal seismograph with a 540 kg pendulum, developed methods for linear approximation of ground oscillations during earthquakes, and created mathematical formulas for refraction corrections. He was instrumental in equipping the astronomical observatory and seismographic station in Timișoara and constructing its planetarium. Additionally, he founded several scientific publications, furthering research in seismology and astronomy.
