Ione Mylonas Shear was an American classical archaeologist born on February 19, 1936, in Champaign, Illinois. She grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, before studying at Wellesley College and Bryn Mawr College, where she earned her Ph.D. in 1968. She worked extensively in Mycenaean excavations alongside her father, George E. Mylonas. Shear was married to archaeologist T. Leslie Shear, Jr. from 1959 and participated in excavations at the Agora of Athens. Her research focused on Aegean Bronze Age architecture, Homer's cultural connections, and Mycenaean monarchy.
