He served as the chief choreographer of the Lezginka ensemble and was honored as the People's Artist of the Russian Federation in 1993. Mataev had a significant impact on the dance community and was known for his contributions to traditional and contemporary dance. He passed away on January 19, 2018, in Tel Aviv, Israel.
