Ira B. Harkey Jr. was an influential American writer and journalist born on January 15, 1918. He served as a professor of journalism and worked as editor and publisher of the Pascagoula Chronicle-Star from 1951 to 1963. Harkey gained prominence for his courageous anti-segregation editorials during the civil rights movement, notably for his support of James Meredith's admission to the University of Mississippi, which earned him the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Writing in 1963. He passed away on October 8, 2006.
