She graduated from the philological faculty of Moscow State University and taught English at school for many years before becoming a professional translator in the late 1950s. Gurova translated various genres of fiction from English, including works by John Updike, Edgar Allan Poe, and William Faulkner, and also science fiction authors like Ursula K. Le Guin and Isaac Asimov. She won the 2001 Strannik Prize for translating Stephen King's 'Hearts in Atlantis.'
