Iris Mary Butler was an English journalist and historian born on June 15, 1905, in Simla, India. She was notable for her writings in the Eastern Daily Press and for publishing a detailed account in 1967 of the complicated relationship between Queen Anne and her confidantes. Butler was related to significant political figures, including her brother, Conservative politician Rab Butler, and was married in 1927 to Gervas Portal. Her legacy continues through her daughter, Jane Williams, and her grandson, Justin Welby, the current Archbishop of Canterbury.
