Irving Lewis Branch was a United States Air Force general born on August 1, 1912. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the China Burma India Theater. After the war, he held several key positions, including chief of staff of the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project and commander of the US Air Force Flight Test Center, where he managed the X-15 program and the B-70 Valkyrie bomber's test flight. He died in a T-38 Talon crash on January 3, 1966, while still on active service.
