Born in Saitama Prefecture, he graduated from Tohoku Imperial University's Faculty of Law and Literature in 1943. He earned his PhD in Literature from Tohoku University in 1962 for his research on the 'Chronicles of Japan' and 'Nihon Shoki.' Umezawa contributed to education as a teacher at Sendai Tohoku High School, later becoming a professor at Miyagi National College of Technology. He was also known for founding the haiku magazine 'Mio' in 1967 and used the pen name Ikai.
