Issan Dorsey (1933-1990), originally Tommy Dorsey Jr., was a prominent Sōtō Zen monk and teacher in San Francisco. As the Dharma heir of Zentatsu Richard Baker, he served as the abbot of the Hartford Street Zen Center. Dorsey had a tumultuous past, having been a prostitute and drag queen, and faced challenges with drug addiction. He passed away due to AIDS complications. Notably, he founded the Maitri Hospice for those dying of AIDS, marking it as the first Buddhist hospice in the U.S., and was regarded as a true embodiment of a bodhisattva.
