She gained national and international recognition for her advocacy of human rights and women's rights. During the Somali civil war from 1991 to 2000, she emerged as one of the influential peace interlocutors, especially during the intense conflict phase from 1991 to 1996, which involved local warlords like interim president Ali Mahdi and General Aidid, believed to be a distant relative of hers. She passed away on October 24, 2002, in Nairobi.
