István Apáthy is a Hungarian electrical engineer born in Eichstätt in 1945. He is a recipient of the Széchenyi Prize and is known for his contributions to space electronics. Apáthy developed the first Hungarian space electronics device and served as the chief designer of the first Eastern European microprocessor-based spacecraft. He was instrumental in creating charged particle energy spectrometers for the VEGA and Rosetta comet probes, as well as for the Phobos Mars probes, and he was the chief designer of the second generation 'Pille' dosimeter system used on the Mir and International Space Stations.
