István Mészáros, popularly known as Hekus Dönci, was one of Hungary's most notorious criminals in the 1940s. Born on April 23, 1920, in Arad, he became infamous for his involvement in murders and his audacious escapes from authorities. He was also notorious for engaging in illicit relationships and for assaulting underage girls. His escapes and the subsequent investigations highlighted operational issues within the reorganized police force following World War II. His capture was considered a significant step in restoring order.
