Ivan Rival was a Canadian mathematician and computer scientist, known for his work in lattice theory and partially ordered sets. He served as a professor at the University of Calgary and later at the University of Ottawa, where he chaired the computer science department. Rival was influential in organizing conferences in order theory and founded the journal Order in 1984. His research also included applications of order theory in data structures and computational geometry. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Manitoba and guided several doctoral students in his academic career.
