He served as a senior lieutenant and squadron commander during World War II in the 106th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment, part of the 2nd Ukrainian Front. Celebrated for his bravery, he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union in 1945. He attained the rank of colonel in the USSR and became a major general in Ukraine in 2008.
