Iwan Poustochkine was born on February 10, 1918, in The Hague, as the youngest son of the Russian diplomat Paul Poustochkine. His family fell into hardship after the Russian Revolution and settled in the Netherlands. Despite being part of the Russian untitled nobility, they were never integrated into the Dutch nobility. With the support of Queen Wilhelmina, Iwan and his brother Constantin pursued studies in medicine, gynaecology, and law. In the 1930s, they founded The Swing Papa’s, the first jazz orchestra in The Hague, marking the inception of the jazz scene in the city.
