John Edmund Amaratunga was a notable Ceylonese planter, lawyer, and politician. He studied at Lincoln's Inn and became a barrister in 1933. Amaratunga served as secretary and later treasurer of the Ceylon National Congress starting in 1939. He was elected to parliament in May 1952 as a representative of the United National Party, winning by a significant margin against James Peter Obeyesekere III. However, he could not retain his seat in the 1956 elections, losing to Vimala Wijewardene of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party by a considerable number of votes.
