Joseph Preston 'Pete' Strom (1918–1987) was an influential American law enforcement officer, serving as the eighth Chief of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division from 1956 until his death. He advocated for professionalism, education, and the use of science in policing. During his tenure, he appointed the first female and African-American agents. The South Carolina Police Academy and Criminal Justice Academy were established under his leadership. Strom emphasized respect for individual rights in law enforcement. Noted for his decency, he also left a legacy through the J. P. Strom Endowment Fund, supporting future law enforcement leaders.
