Jānis Volkolākovs was a prominent Latvian cardiac surgeon born on April 28, 1931, and passed away on December 20, 2020. He served as a professor at Riga Medical Institute (now Riga Stradiņš University) and headed the Department of General, Cardiac, and Vascular Surgery from 1965 to 1995. He was a full member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences and founded the Heart Surgery Center at Stradiņš Hospital, where he was also the head from 1969 to 1998. Volkolākovs performed pioneering surgeries in artificial circulation for both acquired and congenital heart conditions.
