Oversteegen worked as a teacher and later became the director of the Translation Foundation, promoting Dutch authors abroad. He co-founded the journal Merlyn, which introduced close reading in the Netherlands. Oversteegen became a professor at the University of Amsterdam, focusing on literature theory and Antillean literature, authoring a biography on Cola Debrot and receiving the Cola Debrot Prize. His memoirs were published shortly before his death.
