Born in Fort Worth, Texas, he served as a B-24 flight engineer during World War II. Volder graduated from Texas Technological College in 1949 and worked at several companies, including Convair, where he started his research on the CORDIC algorithm. He also worked for Litton Data Systems and Hughes Aircraft Company. Volder had a family, marrying in 1949 and having children and grandchildren.
