He earned his Ph.D. at UC Berkeley and served there as a postdoctoral fellow before becoming a professor at UC Santa Barbara. King's work provoked significant debate in evolutionary biology and focused on neutral substitutions. He passed away unexpectedly in 1983, survived by two children and six others from his first marriage.
