Jack W. Szostak is an American biologist of Polish-British descent and a professor of genetics at Harvard University. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2009, sharing the honor with Elizabeth Blackburn and Carol Greider for their discoveries related to telomeres and the enzyme telomerase, which protect chromosomes. Born in London on November 9, 1952, Szostak grew up in Montreal and Ottawa, Canada. He earned a bachelor's degree in cellular biology from McGill University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Cornell University, later establishing his own lab at Harvard.
