Jacobus Willem "Jaco" de Bakker was a Dutch theoretical computer scientist born on March 7, 1939, in Ede and passed away on December 13, 2012, in Amsterdam. He earned his Ph.D. in 1967 at the University of Amsterdam under Aad van Wijngaarden. De Bakker was a pioneer in programming language semantics and proof theory and worked on concurrent processes from the 1980s. He was involved with the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science and served as its vice-president. He was a member of prestigious academies and received honors, including being knighted in 2002.
