Jacob Palis, Jr. is a Brazilian mathematician and professor born on March 15, 1940, in Uberaba. He has held a permanent position as a professor at the National Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics in Rio de Janeiro since 1973. Palis served as the director of this institute from 1993 to 2003 and was the secretary general of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World from 2004 to 2006, becoming president in 2006. Additionally, he was the president of the International Mathematical Union from 1999 to 2002.
