Jacobus Johannes van Aartsen is a Dutch malacologist born on January 17, 1936, in Sint Laurens, Zeeland. He studied chemical technology at Delft University of Technology. He worked as head of the physical chemistry research center at AKZO and has had a long-standing interest in marine mollusks since becoming a member of the Dutch Malacological Society in 1956. Specializing in European micro-mollusks, he collaborates closely with the Naturalis natural history museum in Leiden.
