Jacobus Verhoeff (February 20, 1927 – March 19, 2018) was a Dutch mathematician and sculptor, best known for inventing the Verhoeff algorithm. He graduated from the University of Amsterdam and later worked at the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica and Delft University of Technology. In 1969, he defended his dissertation on 'Decimal Codes with Error Detection' under the supervision of Adriaan van Wijngaarden, where he proposed his algorithm. From 1971 to 1988, he served as a professor of computer science at Erasmus University Rotterdam, and his sculptures based on various stereometric models are located in public spaces throughout the Netherlands.
