Jacquelyn Joy Mercer (1931–1982) was crowned Miss America in 1949. Born in Thatcher, Arizona, she came from a pioneer family. During her reign, she got married but later divorced, prompting a rule change for Miss America contestants regarding marital status. Mercer was also involved in theater and had a brief marriage to William Oldenburger. She later married Richard Curran and had two children. After several marriages, she passed away from leukemia in 1982.
