Jacqueline Auriol (1917 - 2000) was a pioneering French aviator, renowned as the first woman to break the sound barrier and often referred to as the fastest woman in the world. Born in Chalon-sur-Saône to a wealthy timber merchant, she graduated from the University of Nantes and studied art in Paris. Auriol was active in the French Resistance during World War II. She obtained her pilot's license in 1950, becoming the first woman test pilot, setting five world speed records in aviation and publishing her autobiography 'Je vis pour voler' in 1970.
