Jacques Martinet is a French mathematician born on October 31, 1939, in Grenoble, known for his work in number theory. He studied at the University of Grenoble, where he obtained his Licienciate in 1961 and his doctorate in 1964 under Claude Chabauty. He became a professor at the University of Bordeaux in 1971 and focused on algebraic number theory and algorithmic number theory. He co-developed the Cohen-Martinet heuristics with Henri Cohen for class numbers of quadratic number fields and mentored notable students, including Henri Cohen and Marie-France Vignéras.
