Jakob Hessing is an Israeli Germanist and writer. He was born in 1944 in Lyssowce, Oberschlesien, to East Jewish parents. He grew up in Berlin after his family emigrated there following World War II. He studied history, English and German literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, graduating in 1974 with a Bachelor's degree in English. He worked for the Israeli Foreign Ministry from 1970 to 1978, editing the German-language edition of the magazine "Ariel." He also wrote reviews for the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" from 1991. In 1992, he received his doctorate from the RWTH Aachen University with a dissertation on the reception of Else Lasker-Schüler in postwar Germany. He has been a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem since 1995, and has been head of the German department since 2004. Hessing has written novels and essays in German, and edited the "Jüdischen Almanach" from 1993 to 1999. He has also translated from Hebrew into German. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Kassel since 2010. He has written numerous books, including "Else Lasker-Schüler" (1985), "Der Fluch des Propheten" (1989), "Der Zensor ist tot" (1990), "Die Heimkehr einer jüdischen Emigrantin" (1993), "Mir soll's geschehen" (2005), "Der Traum und der Tod" (2005), "Verlorene Gleichnisse" (2011), "Sebalds Blick" (2015), and "Der jiddische Witz" (2020).
