He served as a member of the Lagting from Vágar representing the Javnaðarflokkurin from 1945 to 1946, becoming the youngest person elected to the Lagting. In the 1946 referendum, he supported self-governance in the Faroe Islands, which led to his expulsion from his party. In 1948, he co-founded the Tjóðveldisflokkurin but never held an elected position with them, becoming an influential figure in the party's early years.
