James A. Baker (1931-2008) was a Texas Supreme Court justice from 1995 to 2002. Born in Indiana, he moved to Texas and graduated from Highland Park High School. He obtained a B.B.A. from Southern Methodist University in 1953, served in the U.S. Army, and earned a Bachelor of Laws in 1958. He practiced civil litigation before becoming a judge on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in 1986. Appointed to the Texas Supreme Court by Governor George W. Bush, he retired in 2002 to return to private practice.
