James A. Wells, born on April 28, 1950, is a renowned Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Cellular & Molecular Pharmacology at UCSF. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and has made significant contributions to protein engineering, phage display, fragment-based lead discovery, cellular apoptosis, and the cell surface proteome. Wells earned his B.A. degrees in biochemistry and psychology in 1973 from UC Berkeley and completed his PhD in biochemistry at Washington State University in 1979. He conducted postdoctoral studies at Stanford University.
