James Allan Ford was a Scottish writer, soldier, and senior civil servant, born on June 10, 1920. He served with the Royal Scots during WWII and was captured in Hong Kong, where his brother was executed. After the war, Ford returned to the civil service and wrote five novels, two focused on his wartime experiences, earning the Frederick Niven Award. He was also president of Scottish PEN and a trustee of the National Library of Scotland. He was awarded the CB in 1978 and worked as Registrar General for Scotland from 1966 to 1969.
